Treatment options for different types of anemia
Anemia is a condition caused by the lack or inefficiency of red blood cells which leads to a shortage of oxygen supply to the tissues. This leads to fatigue quite often. When this happens, the doctor may prescribe a complete blood count test, which counts the number of blood cells present in a sample of blood or a test to determine the shape and size of the red blood cells in the blood or both.
Based on the results of these tests, the type of anemia would be declared, which would prompt the following treatment options:
- Iron deficiency anemia
Taking iron supplements and altering your diet to ensure the consumption of all the required nutrients in sufficient quantities is one of the most common treatment options for this type of anemia. On the other hand, if the condition arises from bleeding (other than menstrual blood loss), then the point of origin of this blood loss must be located and stopped through appropriate means. In this case, surgery is usually required. - Vitamin deficiency anemia
As this is majorly caused due to a deficiency in folic acid, vitamin B-12, and vitamin C, taking dietary supplements and restructuring your current diet to increase the consumption of these supplements is a step towards healing the condition. If the condition is being caused because of the body’s incapability in absorbing vitamin B-12, taking vitamin B-12 shots might be required. Starting with the dose of one shot each day, the dosage can be reduced to one shot a month and the frequency can be adjusted eventually as per requirement. - Sickle cell anemia
For this type of anemia, the treatment options are a provision of oxygen, pain relievers, oral, and intravenous fluids to decrease the associated pain and reduce complications. One particular drug that is used for cancer called Hydroxyurea can also be used for the treatment of sickle cell anemia. - Aplastic anemia
In this case, as the body cannot produce the required number of red blood cells, blood transfusions can be used as a treatment option as it can greatly increase the number of red blood cells in the body. If the bone marrow becomes incapable of producing healthy red blood cells, then the individual would need to get a bone marrow transplant.| - Anemia caused by chronic diseases
In this case, the major focus would be on the treatment of the underlying cause of anemia than the anemia itself. Blood transfusions can be done if the condition becomes severe. A synthetic hormone called erythropoietin, which is generally produced by the kidney, can also be injected to stimulate the production of red blood cells and reduce fatigue. - Anemia related to bone marrow diseases
Similar to the previous condition, this treatment would also focus on the treatment of the underlying cause which is the bone marrow condition. These treatments can take the form of chemotherapy, medication, or bone marrow transplant.
Anemia’s severity can range from mild to severe to fatal. Choosing the right treatment option for these main types of anemia at the right time plays a vital role in the consequences this condition might play.
