Home Remedies for Migraines for Pregnant Women

Migraine is characterized by intense pain on one side of the head and is a neurological condition. The main cause is unknown but genetics may increase the chances of triggering a migraine. Women experience migraines during their menstrual cycle and pregnancy. To relieve stress and pain from migraine during pregnancy, here are some home remedies:

1. Dark room
Turn off all the lights in a room and maintain a cozy setting. A migraine can make you sensitive to light and even more so for people with pregnancy. Turn off all the electronics too. Take a nap or listen to some music. This can relieve you of stress and relax your mind.

2. Rest
Take a nap and rest to relieve stress and to relax your body and mind. During pregnancy, you tend to go through a lot of emotional, mental, and physical stress which can easily trigger a migraine. It is important to get the right amount of sleep and rest.

Consult your doctor for safe relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation since relaxing the muscles around your body can help with migraines.

3. Compresses
Use a cold compress on a damp towel on your forehead. During pregnancy, expanded blood vessels in the head can cause migraines. A cold compress constricts blood vessels in your head and eases you of the pain caused by migraines. Similarly, the shrinking of blood vessels can also cause further pain. For this, a compress can work well to alleviate the pain. Find out which works best for you and stick to that method.

4. Hydration and diet
Drink lots of water to stay hydrated as women experiencing pregnancy can easily get dehydrated and tired. Lack of water in your body can easily trigger headaches. Eating a properly balanced diet can also reduce the occurrence of migraines. Include the right supplements and nutrition that work against migraines such as magnesium and ginger.

5. Prenatal massage
Go to a massage therapist to relieve stress from your shoulders, back, and neck caused due to pregnancy. Be aware of trigger points that can cause contractions in your body.

6. Ginger
Consume some ginger to relieve some symptoms of migraine such as nausea. You can eat some directly or make a tea out of it and drink it up. It is found to block prostaglandins and helps prevent migraines.

7. Peppermint oil
Peppermint oil has cooling effects to reduce tension and headaches. Take a few drops of the oil and rub it between your palms. Apply it to your forehead by massaging the oil on it for a full minute. Do this before bed.

8. Lemon juice
Lemon juice has a lot of positive effects and curing headaches is one. It also helps the immune system and cools down your body. Pregnancy can cause headaches by reducing vitamin C levels in your body. Lemon juice improves blood circulation and also flushes out toxins since it is an antioxidant.

9. Aromatherapy
There is nothing better than the calming scent of essential oils to help a pregnant woman get through her day. Some of these oils play an effective role in eliminating migraines. Lavender oil and peppermint oil are known best to help with migraines. Take a few drops of these oils and inhale the scent directly or mix it in carrier oil or water and apply it to your temples.
