8 types of foods to avoid when suffering from renal cancer
Patients who are suffering from renal cancer need to keep themselves in good health. This can be done through diet. There are some foods to avoid with renal cancer. Eight types of such foods are listed in this article.
Foods with potassium
One of the foods to avoid with renal cancer is banana. This is a commonly eaten fruit but those with renal cancer or any kidney problems should avoid this fruit. The reason is that bananas contain high levels of potassium. Potassium can build up if consumed in excess and can affect kidney functioning.
A banana contains more than 400mg of potassium and it is advisable to avoid its consumption by those having kidney cancer. All other foods that have potassium like chocolate, avocado, dates, peanut butter, milk, and broccoli must be avoided or consumed in very limited quantities.
Foods with phosphorus
Phosphorous is another chemical that builds up in the body when the kidneys are weak. Those with renal cancer cannot excrete phosphorus, resulting in its build-up in the blood, which can cause a lot of problems. Foods that are rich in phosphorus include beans, chocolate, liver, milk, cheese, and yogurt.
Carbonated drinks
Carbonated drinks do not provide any nutrition to the body. They are high in calories and have high levels of sugar. Both sugar and calories are not good for the kidney and hence carbonated drinks must be strictly avoided.
Canned foods
Canned foods are very convenient and are easy to use. However, all such foods have preservatives added to it, with salt being the major preservative. Salt contains sodium, which is not good for the kidney.
Those suffering from renal cancer must avoid salt and canned foods. As an alternative, canned food with no salt can be preferred.
Processed meats
Just like canned foods, processed meats also contain a high amount of salt. Those with renal cancer must avoid all salty foods and processed meats must strictly be avoided.
Frozen foods
Another popular food is frozen food. This is refrigerated food that can be heated and ready to eat. This is again a processed food. It usually has a lot of sugar and is high in calories. It can also have a lot of salt, as well as fat. All these make it a food to avoid.
Pickled foods
Pickled foods include pickles and processed olives. Pickled foods have preservatives, which is mostly salt. They may also have excess oil that is not good for health. The curing or processing involved in pickling is the reason why it should be avoided.
Chips and crackers
Chips and crackers are tasty foods. They are snacks that are usually high in salt and fat. This type of food tends to be overeaten, leading to problems, and hence must be avoided.
